2018 President’s Address

Dear colleagues,

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the Singapore Medical Society of Victoria (SMSV). For the past 11 years, we have been able to provide a platform to support overseas medical students, both Singaporeans and of other nationalities in their journeys. Being a student-led organisation, SMSV has grown exponentially and is only where it is today with the incredible support from you.

SMSV has always focused on bringing members together through its social and educational activities. Over the last few years, the Asclepius Cup and ‘Meddies’ Dinner have provided opportunities for multiple year levels and alumni members to meet. We also started events to cater to the growing interests of our members including an E-Sports competition and expanded mission trips to work with medical students from the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the University of New South Wales (UNSW). And, we have more in store.

The 2018 SMSV Executive Committee aims to build on this concept of networking. Therefore, our entire team has been brainstorming and planning for more events such as a language workshop and a brand-new physiology challenge – the Apollo Cup, all whilst expanding our educational resources with lectures from fellow students and guest lecturers. It will definitely be an exciting year moving forward.

As you pursue medicine in Victoria, I also do encourage you to maximise the opportunities available here. There will be many lessons along the way and it will be an amazing time of growth. All of these intangible skills will undoubtedly shape you into a better doctor in the future and will help you adapt to various clinical environments. Most importantly, however, do remember to take care of yourself.

With that in mind, along with the entire team, I would like to welcome you once again and wish you the best for the year ahead!

Kindest Regards,
Soh Han Jie
President, Singapore Medical Society of Victoria
